Through the eyes of a strong-willed woman comes the remarkable story of Irena Gut and the triumphs of the human spirit over devastating tragedy as she risks her life to save a generation of Jews from the atrocities of the Holocaust. Although this Canadian film had a much wider theatrical release in Canada than the typical Canadian film, for some reason its distributor, Elevation Pictures, decided not to give the film a significant marketing budget. As a result, the film performed poorly at the box office and was pulled from most theaters by the end of its third week of release. (about 2 minutes) The opening title card announces that the events are taking place on the eastern borders of Poland. This area of Poland has been invaded by the Soviet Union. However, the area is occupied by German forces. Irena Gut Opdyke: What does it matter who we are? What we do is what we are. I admit I’ve done a poor job of keeping up with current movie releases over the past few years, as my knowledge has been mostly ad hoc, based on what’s showing up on my streaming services. I’d never heard of this movie until I saw it on Showtime a few nights ago, and I knew about the same about each of the parties involved. I also rarely write reviews on IMDB, but in this case I’m drawn to it in light of the undeservedly mediocre overall rating, skewed by a review that I find laughable all around. And so to the movie itself. As others have noted, the acting and production values may be off, but what a story! There’s more to it than a little Schindler’s List here, but it’s made all the more extraordinary by the fact that the main character has anything but a privileged position. Others have summed up the plot well; I won’t go into it here, but as impressive as the story is, what’s even more impressive is the moral complexity and humanity of almost every character, even the German ones, and the director’s astute insight that while they’re not the main villains here, the Soviets are almost as accountable as the Nazis for their actions during this time, largely debunking the misconception of “The Good Fight” (as are so many other things completely unrelated to this film, like the internment of Japanese Americans, our bombing of civilians in Germany and Japan, our indifference to the plight of European Jews, etc., etc.). I’m often moved by great cinema, but I have to admit that I was a little more than thrilled to watch the follow-up stories of the real-life characters that roll in during the credits (don’t miss it!). This gives me somewhere between an 8 and a 9, but it’s given the benefit of the doubt due to the grandeur of the story and the need to increase the collective score here. I realize that although this film is not Polish, it takes place there, forming a pair of two of the best films of recent years that I have seen, along with “Forgotten Love”. Highly recommended.
